5It's Useful  Jan 27, 2011
By Peter
Like a lot of people here, I saw this darn thing on TV and had to check it out. I think two main things potential buyers want to know is a) is it junk, and b) does the darn thing work?

First, "Is it junk?" No, it's not a cheapo piece of exercise equipment that will fall apart the first time you drop it. It's actually made of a hard plastic, with metal ends. So no, it's not a piece of junk, but rather a pretty sturdy dumbbell. Will it last for years? Probably. Also of note: the dumbbell does NOT have a motor, run on batteries, or shake by itself- that's your job and how you get exercise using it.

Next up, "Does it work?" Well, first you have to define "works", which will depend on your fitness goals. If you're looking to bulk up your arms, and really pack on the muscle, don't expect one five-pound dumbbell to make you look like the Incredible Hulk, or the guy in the commercial. It simply won't "work" for that purpose. (Suggest Smokin' Hot Guns!!: How an Average Guy Can Get Big, Muscular Arms In One Workout A Week if that's more your goal).

Instead, what it will most definitely do is provide exercise for your arms (and other muscles), maybe add a little muscle if you're really out of shape, and tone them up. For these purposes, I would have to say that it does indeed "work". I think most anyone who picks this thing up and shakes it non-stop for 6 minutes would have to admit they feel like their arms have gotten a little exercise in.

Sooo, if you're not looking to get huge arms, but rather some decent exercise and arm toning- check it out, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

5Do Not be Put off by Negative Criticism!  Jul 21, 2010
By J P Falcon
Ok, here's the truth as I have no agenda to either endorse or kill this product: I allowed myself to get a bit out of shape and as I have finally turned the corner and making marked improvements in my diet and physique, I noticed that my upper arms were flabby, and I allowed them to become weak. I was skeptical of this product, but I decided to give it a try. When I did the first 6 minute workout, I managed to breeze through it, and I foolishly believed I was in better shape than I thought. The next day however proved me wrong, as I found the repetition of the routine actually became harder. I also discovered that I did indeed have a weak arm which could not match the other. I felt the burn and fatique after the 6 minute exercise program each time I did it. But then, by week three, I found myself doing the 6 minute program 2 or 3 times a day, and though I was still not breezing through it as I did on day 1, I was managing to complete the entire program. I also was doing some added reps on my weak arm and I have managed to balance the two.
Now, after a month I am not going to say that I was suddenly ripped, of course not, but I did notice something. At a moment when I was simply soaping my upper arms, I discoverd that they were more "solid" and "tight" than they were a few short weeks prior. Let's face it, you know your own body, so when you discover a change, without even consciously looking for one, you become a bit startled. Well, I was, and realized that there was some definite toning to my arms. I am also moving the shake weight harder than I was thus increasing my strength, and trying new routines.
So, having the product now for about two months, I continue my three 6 minute a day routine and am feeling much better doing it. I have found that it is a great motivator and one of the few weight regimens that is not boring. After all, if you cannot spare at least 6 minutes of your day doing this program, then what do you want to do?
Highly Recommended...........

3Works,but hard to do...  Oct 28, 2010
By Robert D. Watson "www.green-machine.info"
I tried the shake weight, knowing full well that I would have to do the shaking. Many of the negative reviews of this product seem to think that the weight itself should be shaking, and that's the sole reason why they don't like it.

Overall, I thought this product was pretty good. It's very difficult to learn how to use, in order to keep it shaking while moving it around, and I think you have to make sure that you reverse your grip from time to time in order to get even work on both arms (if you hold it with your left hand on the bottom and the right hand on top, you're probably not working both evenly). The DVD, nor the product manual seem to indicate this, but I found that it was easy to figure that out by trying it.

If you're not going to take the time to work with this, just like any product, you will not succeed. You probably won't even figure out how to do it right, the shaking of the weight while trying to keep your muscles mostly stationary as they say you should do is actually very difficult. It will take practice, but for upper body exercise at home, I think this is a pretty good solution for home strength training.

I would have liked to see a wider range of weights, or at least a notch or something to add an extra one pound weight or something. As it is, once you use this often enough, you'll outgrow their "6 minute workout" and start needing something else.

5Awesome  Dec 15, 2010
By Dave
First I want to address the guys that gave low ratings.
If you can't shake this little 5lb weight, then you are very weak, and need it more then any one. If you are weak, it does make it awkward to use at first. Thats because your not used to it yet...duh? Did you expect to be a pro the first time you use it? Did you expect to look like the guy on tv after 1 day?
Another guy was surprised to find out you have to shake it? Ok thats all I will say on that....I think it speaks for it self.

Now for review: I have been working out since I was in weight training class in high school, I'm 37 now. This weight DOES perform EXACTLY as advertised. I was pleasantly surprised to find this little 5lb weight can make me break a sweat and feel the burn after only a few min of use.
You will use and build fast twitch white muscle from the short bursts of movement, and you will also build slow twitch red muscle from the hundreds of muscle contractions done in just a couple minutes. Fast twitch muscle is tight and compact, slow twitch is large bulk of the muscle for size and endurance. I can see how this will bennifit both.
I don't know if you will build raw power with this, but you will most certainly burn calories, lean muscle, get ripped, and even some bulk after long term use. (natural looking bulk, not wrestler looking bulk.
One thing people must realize. The only way to look like the guy on TV is many many years of very hard work, and a strict diet. (5-10 years)
It's a shake weight, not a magic wand.

I recommend this for any one

4Sore!  Aug 28, 2010
By Lea
Ok so I found mine at target, i'm a woman and I bought the mens one, I did not purchase to reduce arm flab I actually purchased to increase endurance/stamina/strength in the arms and shoulders as I am an Echocardiographer, basically what that means is an ultrasound tech that scans the heart, and you guessed it...I have to scan under heavy obese breasts...to get to the heart and no the patients can't always hold their own up they might be unconscious, and anyone that's had one knows that we have to push hard between ribs paces for extended periods to get images(while holding up those boobs with the same arm) I am a new grad and boy was I in for a surprise at how weak I am!!!!!!!!!!! I can't endure more than 10 minutes and not pushing hard means crappy pictures which means angry cardiologist and we have to do 10 a day for 30 minutes each...yikes!! This is my answer. I got the mens one because those boobs usually weigh more than the female version and I'm trying to create endurance with that added weight like I said. I've done it two days now and my shoulders, biceps, triceps, pectorals, traps and lats all ache!!! whether or not the flab goes anywhere this is definately a good workout for what I need.
